As we have become more aware of the damage we are doing to the Earth, we are becoming increasingly concerned with ‘going green’. ‘Going green’ is just a fancy term to say that we are trying to cut down on our energy use, and there is no better place to start than at home. Our homes are where we use, and waste, the majority of energy, apart from our cars. However, our homes are also the places that are the easiest to remedy.
Just take a look at a few of the basic tips below to help save the world and your bank balance!
Turn Off The Switch
The major mistake that people make with regards to their appliances is not turning them off properly. Just because you have unplugged the appliance at the mains doesn’t necessarily mean that you have stopped the flow of energy. That got your attention, didn’t it? You have to turn off the switch to stop the flow of energy. Otherwise, the electricity will still reach the outlet, and you will still waste a whole lot of electricity that you also have to pay for.
Swap The Light Bulbs
Light bulbs are the most inefficient appliance in the whole house. Why? Because light bulbs create as much heat as they do light, and that is a waste of energy. However, you can stop that from happening by simply switching light bulbs. To help the planet, manufacturers have created energy efficient light bulbs that last longer, too. It takes them a while to light up, and they are more expensive, but that it a cheap price to pay compared to saving the Earth!
Install Renewable Energy Sources
Just because everyone else uses gas and electricty to power their homes, doesn’t mean you have to also. In fact, one look at www.sunshinerenewables.ca and you will find all the information you need on renewable energy sources for the home. For example, you could go down the solar panel route. Although they do tend to be costly, some local authorities are subsidizing the cost to cut down on fossil fuel output. Or, you can go to wind power and a wind turbine if you have space and live in a windy city!
Switch Energy Suppliers
If you cannot afford renewable sources of energy, you are stuck with the conventional methods. Still, you can cut down on your usage by switching energy suppliers. Gas and electricity suppliers seem like they have a monopoly on the market, but they are still subject to competition. In fact, the competition in the energy industry is as fierce as any industry. One quick call to a rival and they will offer you a better rate than your existing one. Or, you can try a comparison website and see who offers the best deals in your area. It is that easy!
Turn Down The Appliances
Appliances like fridges and freezers have settings to determine how cold they are. The colder they are, the more energy they use. Flick the switch and turn them down to a respectable level to conserve energy.
If you want to help save the planet, start at home.
